Art is all around us, everyday and especially during the holidays. Can you imagine celebrating Christmas without Christmas music. Do you listen before or after Thanksgiving? This is an ongoing debate in my home. Every weekend there are many family friendly opportunities to enjoy live Christmas music. Put a date on your calendar today!
It wouldn’t be the holidays without at least one visit to a local arts & craft show. There are so many right in Jackson. I enjoy seeing what local artisans have been working on throughout the year. I love finding that one of a kind gift for that hard to buy for person on my list.
We trim our tree with homemade ornaments made with so much love. I’m flooded with memories when I put the felt snowman I made at the Detroit Historical Museum on our tree. My family watches the same classic movies year after year. Sometimes we forget that great films are an art form too. My favorites, “Its a Wonderful life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are a must and don’t get me started on “A Christmas Carol!” Every Christmas Eve after church we watch the George C. Scott version.
Even Christmas cards are art whether they are beautiful and sentimental or knee-slapping hilarious. Behind every card is an artist. The Nutcracker was the first ballet I saw, and the magical memories have stayed with me since I was a girl. Now I take my little girl. Within a 30 mile radius, I’m betting there are 5 versions of the Nutcracker to see!
As you go about your busy days, I hope you will slow down and experience the joy of the season with the arts. I bet many of your family traditions are rooted in the arts too. Enjoy and celebrate!
At Jackson School of the Arts there are lots of ways to celebrate the holidays in December. Follow us on Facebook and don’t forget that gift certificates for dance, art and theater classes make a wonderful present.
