Our theater program is a fun way for our young students to not only explore the basics of working on the stage, but think about how their faces, hands and bodies can help communicate effectively and creatively.
In our Holiday Theater Players class last year, the students helped write the script for their recent Merry & Bright performance in addition to thinking about the staging and flow of the performance. Our instructor, Miss Erin has a diverse set of activities to give the students variety and work different skill sets through each weekly session. The warmup exercises get them thinking about facial expressions and how their bodies can change their communication. The kids especially love the improvisation exercises such as “Bus Stop” where they act our unscripted scenarios around a certain theme. These exercises give the students opportunities to be especially creative and think of different ways for them to tell a story.
Of course, there are also a handful of rehearsals of the Merry & Bright performance along the way and Miss Erin was always supportive, but also constructive on how to keep improving their skills, performance and attention to details. In their final class session ahead of the Merry & Bright Performance, the students got the treat of checking out the theater room in advance to make sure they felt comfortable and could visualize the performance ahead of time.
